It would be ideal if there were a perfect formula for helping those who are suffering, but no single solution fits every situation.
Each person’s circumstances are unique, shaped by the many aspects of their life. We’ve all faced our own trials—whether it was a difficult divorce, loss of a loved one, illness, financial struggles, emotional challenges, or strained relationships—and if we reflect on those times, there was always someone who supported us through them.
Reflecting on the ways I’ve received support over the years, I’d like to share some experiences that may inspire you with ideas for helping others who are suffering:
Financial support. There have been several times in my life when I received financial help, including a situation where someone asked a friend to assist me. That friend went so far as to create a marketing position at his company just to provide me with a job.
Emotional support. I’ve had the support of many teachers, mentors, coaches, and friends during some of my most challenging times, and their guidance truly helped me transform my life.
Family support. I will always be deeply thankful for my siblings, who were like angels, supporting me through the challenging years after losing my mother at age six and facing an unkind stepmother.
Being an example. There are many people in my life whom I have observed closely with the intention of following their example of living a life of high ideals, kindness, integrity, and faith. They include friends, family members, mentors, heroes of history and saints. They have impacted my life in very profound positive ways.
Expressing Compassion. There have been also people in my life from whom I felt a deep sense of compassion, kindness and humanity in the way they treated me when I was going through difficult times. In those moments, I felt they care about me and their acts of kindness helped me to heal.
Affirming Faith. There were also people in my life whose unwavering faith and positive outlook inspired me not to give up and to keep moving forward. They served as pillars of hope for me.
Prayer. Perhaps the most powerful way to support others is though prayer. It is such a reassuring feeling when someone says to you. “I am praying for you.” You know that they care and they are entrusting the challenge to a Higher Power who will can help.
I am truly thankful for all the ways I have been shown love, support, and care, and for the reminders that I can offer the same kindness to others. Each act of kindness, encouragement, and compassion I’ve received has not only helped me through difficult times but has also served as a powerful example of how we can uplift and guide one another. This gratitude inspires me to show the same love and support to those around me, knowing that small gestures can have a profound impact on someone’s life.
