Reflecting on these two essential principles, I recognize how foundational they have been to my personal and spiritual growth. For many years, prior to truly embracing responsibility for my life, I was consistent at blaming and playing victim, which led to ups and downs that felt like a roller coaster. I sought happiness externally, until I made the conscious choice to pursue support from mentors and invest in personal development through teachings and classes.
Looking back on my journey, I clearly see that consistency and persistency were essential for overcoming the many challenges that I faced, beginning at the age of six when I lost my mother to leukemia and my father remarried someone who was truly cruel to my siblings and me. It took a lot of persistence to finally reach a place of forgiveness for her, my father and many others towards whom I had held resentment.
I am certain that you, too, have faced and overcome many trials and understand first hand the value of consistency and persistence. It is essential to acknowledge our efforts and celebrate our achievements. As we moved through our tribulations, we had to draw on our inner strength to make it through the darkness and come to the end of the tunnel to see the light of triumph. It is time to congratulate ourselves for our determination and perseverance.
The true value of nurturing consistency and persistence lies in experiencing the positive changes they bring and seeing how they transform our lives. This is why Jesus said “Be thou transformed the renewing of your mind.” My own life has been transformed because my willingness to forgive, let go of the tendency to blame or see myself as a victim, strengthened my faith, and chosen not to criticize myself and others. Through these shifts, I have learned to be more loving, kind, patient, generous, accepting, and ultimately, a better person.
Here are some important practices to cultivate consistency and persistence:
- Take action. Be proactive and move forward towards your plans or projects with confidence and faith.
- Stay focused. Go for the solution and stay on track.
- Finish what you start. Be willing to see your projects completed and develop a plan of action until completion.
- Stay positive. Be diligent with the quality of your thoughts and language. Make sure that they are always positive.
- Cultivate inner growth. Let go of habits that hold you back and adopt practices that expand your consciousness.
- Focus on gratitude. Every day think or write at least 10 things, people, experiences that you are grateful for.
- Ask for divine guidance. Strengthen your faith and connection by remaining mindful of the divine throughout your day and engaging in regular prayer.
- Seek help. Embrace support from others including professionals, coaches, mentors, etc.
Consistency and persistence are key to achieving meaningful growth and long-term success. Consistency means showing up regularly and taking small, steady actions, while persistence is the ability to keep going despite obstacles or setbacks. Together, they build discipline, resilience, and confidence, helping you stay committed to your goals and ultimately see lasting results.
