I enjoy writing about themes that remind and help us to express our true essence: LOVE. I totally believe that what the world needs right now is love. Love is the master cure for any challenging situation that we face in life. Love invites us to respond with kindness instead of reacting with anger. Love invites us to treat everyone with respect and dignity. Love invites us to be generous and help anyone in need. Love is continuously inviting us to express our true nature in our human interactions. The question is: are we allowing love to be the driver in our lives? Or, are we allowing judgement, greed, jealousy, fear, doubt, unforgiveness, blame or any other limiting behavior to obstruct our innate desire to love?
How can we express love to our fellow human beings? We can do it in so many diverse ways and for everyone is different. I’d like to share some ways that have worked for me:
- Love. The natural essence of your heart is love and it wants to be expressed freely and openly. A Course in Miracles says that only love is real: “The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.”
- Kindness. Each act of kindness (however small it may be) expressed with love sends out a ripple that reaches others. Each ripple is a wave of energy, a vibration that when joined with other ripples, together they bring about the changes that we want to see in the world.
- Respect. Each human being must be treated with respect. This is a basic principle that is of upmost importance to follow in our human interactions. Even if we disagree with others, we have the responsibility to treat everyone with respect and dignity. Buddhism expresses it this way: “Rudeness or unkindness in speech is a form of violating the other. Sincerity does not imply rudeness or brutality. If there is anger in what we say, what we say loses its value. What prevails there is not the intention to communicate something, but the desire to hurt or destroy the other. Violence does not cease to be violence because it is verbal.”
- Compassion. The human race faces many challenges every day. It is only common sense to not add to the load of the suffering of humanity, but instead to try to alleviate it with our attitude of compassion and caring for one another with love.
- Acceptance. Letting go of control is the key to accepting others as they are. The challenge is that we constantly want people to behave the way we want. Not only we suffer when we try to control the behaviors of others, but we also cause pain in others. Our responsibility is to control ourselves and in reality, this is all we can do.
- Understanding. We don’t know what people have gone through and suffered in their lives. We might not be aware of their past experiences and this is why it is crucial that we have an understanding heart instead of rushing to judge. Remember that what we don’t like about someone else is an invitation to change within ourselves. People are mirrors of what needs to change in ourselves.
- Patience. This is the king of all virtues. We have the opportunity every day to exercise this muscle. To be patient with others means to be humble and not to want it our way, but instead to wait for the right time to get the answers or the outcome that we are seeking.
- Generosity. Every day we have the opportunity to be generous with our time, talent and treasure. The rewards are the satisfaction to help others and also to enter the flow of the law of cause and effect: as we give we receive.
- Service. How wonderful it is to be able to help someone in need through our service. It could be cooking meals and do an errand or visiting the sick. There are so many ways that we can be channels of loving service.
- Joy. We can demonstrate love through the expression of joy. For every one of us it is different. We can share our joy by sharing our specific talents and abilities with our brothers and sisters. It could be with a smile, or creative expressions like music, art, dancing, sports and so on.
As we commit to sharing our love with humanity, what we are really doing is being channels of God’s love because God is everything in this list and much more. What we will be doing is bringing the essence of the divine into this world.
I invite you to commit to expressing any of the ideas above, or your own, and share the love of your heart with the world. The satisfaction that comes from being a source of love in all of your interactions far surpasses the effort that you might have to put into doing it. Resolve to becoming the best version of yourself every day.
I invite you to listen to this song:
Lyrics: What the World Needs Now Is Love
1965 song with lyrics by Hal David and music composed by Burt Bacharach
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No not just for some, but for everyone
Lord, we don’t need another mountain
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross
Enough to last ’til the end of time
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some, but for everyone
Lord, we don’t need another meadow
There are cornfields and wheat fields enough to grow
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine
Oh listen, Lord, if you want to know
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some, oh, but just for every, every, everyone
