We all face moments in life that feel like standing at the base of a mountain — the task ahead looks daunting, and we wonder how we’ll ever make it to the top. Yet, with patience, intention, and faith, even the tallest mountains can be climbed one step at a time.
Recently, I was scheduled to help wash dishes in the kitchen of the community where I live. That evening, we happened to have a large group of visitors attending a program at our retreat center. When I walked into the kitchen, I was met with a mountain of pots, pans, and dishes.
Right then and there, I set an intention: to take it one minute at a time and give it my very best. As I began washing each piece, little by little, a sense of hope arose within me. I realized that I could complete the task — even if it took a while.
There were many other souls working on different tasks, and I felt I wasn’t alone as I watched everyone giving their best. A couple of hours later, when the mountain of dishes had finally disappeared and we were finishing up the details, I joked that it felt like climbing a mountain — and after all, we had reached the top without hesitation or complaints.
Then I added, “Isn’t it the same in real life? When we’re faced with challenges, it can feel like we’re climbing a mountain — unsure if we’ll ever reach the top, see the view, or find the solutions we’re looking for.”
Each of us has certainly climbed our own mountains. We’ve achieved goals, completed projects, overcome challenges, and stayed focused as we move forward in life. All of it has been done one step at a time — and when we look back, we feel that deep sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that comes from striving toward our highest potential.
Five Ways to Climb Life’s Mountains
As I reflect on the best way to climb the mountains in our lives, here are some key points to consider:
- Stay focused. This is vital so you can direct all your energy toward completing your task instead of scattering it in different directions. Your energy carries consciousness, and once you set an intention in a single direction, it will continue to flow there.
- Take action. Seek divine guidance and be sure to keep moving forward, taking steady steps toward the solution rather than dwelling on the problem. As your focus shifts toward the solution, life begins to open doors you didn’t know existed.
- Remain positive. Watch your thoughts carefully. If your mind starts pointing out the negatives or tempting you to dwell on what’s wrong, gently redirect it and affirm your success instead.
- Connect with others who support you. Surround yourself with people who are going through or have gone through similar experiences, or find a mentor or coach who can guide you toward the right solutions.
- Trust in your divine power. Remember that you were born endowed with divine potential. To embrace it, believe in yourself — in your talents, abilities, and in the loving guidance of a higher power that wants to see you thrive in every area of your life.
When we approach life this way — with focus, faith, and steady effort — every mountain becomes climbable. And once we reach the top, we realize that the view was worth every single step.
Reflection
What mountain are you climbing today? Take a moment to set your intention, breathe deeply, and remember that every step you take — no matter how small — is bringing you closer to the summit.
